CSE Center of Safety Excellence
Research and Innovations in Process and Plant Safety

Humans and the environment must be protected adequately;
otherwise, technical plants may not be operated.
Technical plants however come with a certain degree of risk. A reasonable balance between the economic use and risks must prevail. The CSE-institute seeks to undertake research and be innovative with a view to shape the future of safety engineering in collaboration with competent partners. Safety must not only be taught in all areas – but must become second nature.
CSE values:
- Applied research and development
- Education in Process and Plant Safety at Universities
- Network with research and industrial partners
- Research at the CSE-Institute focusses sustainably on long-term core areas (CSE Areas of Research) in the field of Process and Plant Safety.
- Sustainable innovations are a product of research. Innovation programs (CSE Inno-Programs) are initiated within the core areas of research.
- A number of doctorial and master thesis programs are undertaken in each Inno-Program at the CSE-Institute.
- The CSE industrial advisory committee – the members of the CSE-Society – give trends and demands for future research topics. The CSE industrial advisory committee initiates research at the CSE-Institute.
- The CSE scientific advisory board priorises and recommends the research focus.
- Our partner go for sustainable safety technology.
- Our partner ensure long-term research at the CSE-Institute.
- The CSE-Institute keeps competences in process and plant safety for the Industry.

- Training of young academics with a speicial focus: the technical safety mind set.
- Lectures in the area of Process and Plant Safety (at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, University of Kaiserslautern and Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences )
- Safety Engineering in chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical as well as the oil and gas sectors.
- Actual use cases from the industry.
- Lectures whose curriculum is as recommended by the German Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (DECHEMA).

- CSE scientific advisory board – comprising of CSE-Society members defines the trends and sets the requirements in regard to research areas. This advisory board initiates research.
- The partners ensure that research is application oriented.
- CSE institute ensures that competencies are maintained in the industry
- Our partners are safety oriented entities.
