Finished! The two 730 bar tanks of the CSE High Pressure Loop have been installed. At the beginning of 2019, the leak test of the pressure vessels for the medium pressure stage was successfully completed. It is the second part of the test facility after installing the 62 m3 buffer vessels in the low pressure 156 bar first part.
The installation was rather challenging: the steel supporting structure of 17 m in height and the preparation of the two tanks were done in parallel. Nobody knew before whether the two tanks would be tight at pressures of around 1000 bar. Neither the hydrostatic test device nor the vessel itself had seen such high pressures before – the former operating pressure was only about 400 bar. At the end of the first day of the hydrostatic test it was clear that 12 washers made from an extra hardened steel were needed. One of the students from CSE acted as a currier to bring these washers, manufactured during night, to the test place near Hamburg.
Midnight, mid May 2019. All trucks and workers went home after a very busy day. The two 730 bar tanks were installed into the test rig. It was much more work than expected. Looking back, the CSE High Pressure Loop continues to develop. The required working pressure of 730 bar was achieved and can be used in future tests. Before the tanks were installed on the test rig, it was necessary to build a 17 m high supporting structure where the tanks can be attached. The pressure vessels for the high-pressure stage will also be installed there once the pressure and tightness tests have been successfully completed.
May 25, 2019. The steel frame was finally build up and the tanks were installed from above in precision work. The low pressure stage with a design pressure of 150 bar was inaugurated and put into operation during the Joint US and European DIERS Users Group Meeting at the CSE in Pfinztal. The participants were able to visit the 730 bar part as well as the whole test rig during the meeting. Live tests were performed on a bursting disc and a safety valve.
Since then, regular series of measurements for PhD and student theses of the CSE Institute have been carried out on the CSE High Pressure Loop. For example, measurements of two-phase flow through rupture disks and measurements of multiple-choking in pipelines and fittings have been performed. At CSE high pressure loop type tests and flow tests for nearly any application can be performed. Whether it’s a safety valve, a rupture disk, a nozzle, an orifice or a valve. With a pressure of 150 bar in the buffer vessels and test capacities up to 440.000 kg/h and a diameter of up to DN1400 nearly any type of test can be carried out. But not only large tests can be performed. The CSE High pressure loop also offers the possibility to run tests with very low pressures or very small mass flow rates. Flow measurement is performed automatically with high precision coriolis flow measurement systems. In the final expansion stage the regulation of the mass flow rate is done by different control valves with a size of 1” to 12”.

August 2019. It is time to deeply express the thankfulness of all members of the CSE institute to the grant of Irene and Friedrich Vorwerk Stiftung. This was the intention of the Director of the CSE institute, Prof. Jürgen Schmidt, when he visited Tostedt in Germany, where the Stiftung is located. A group picture including photos of special moments of the last 4 years, when the CSE Loop was build, will hopefully remined all workers involved in the planning, construction, transportation and installation of the HP Loop. “It was an exiting time and unique project and we are thankful to had the support of the Irene and Friedrich Vorwerk Stiftung”.
Prof. Jürgen Schmidt and Carsten Schmidt from CSE Center of Safety Excellence gave the gift of all members of CSE to the Executives of Vorwerk.
