Innovation Programs
Innovation programs are planned research programs that belong to one or more CSE Areas of Research. They are structured to last for a duration of about 6 to 8 years.

Smart Overpressure Protection Device
SmOP
Safety valves devices have been proven over time; they however have the tendency to “flutter” – characterized by intense high frequency opening and closing of valves – or they tend to deviate from the intended operating conditions. They are sized assuming the worst case scenario and are such over dimensioned in most cases. They are the limiting factor in the operation of a technical plant. more

Hydrocarbon Storage Safety Device
HySafe
Hazardous substances are usually stored in tanks in liquid state. As the filling level changes, the volume of gas above the liquid also changes. Factors such as heat from the sun, wind and rain affect the temperature in the tank such that it changes overtime. The gas thus expands or contracts and this means that the pressure also varies. Storage tanks are designed to only withstand small overpressure and vacuum. These vessels must therefore be equipped with a venting device. There is gas intake whenever the temperature drops, or whenever the liquid contents are emptied from the vessel. Vice-versa, gas is extracted from the tank when there is temperature increase or when the tank is being filled – in this sense, the tank “breaths”. more

Fail-Safe Protective Circuit After Crack/Leak Detection
SmartGrid
No more discharge of toxic substances – not even in the event of failure in technical plants: “GreenSafety” area of research at CSE Institute seeks to attain. To achieve this, even the smallest of cracks on walls of apparatus in plants and pipelines must be detected early in advance. Cracks are caused by vibrations, constant change of pressure (dynamic loading) or corrosion. In future, cracks in vessels must not lead to leakage. In case of leakage, the hazardous substance must be detected when the leak is exceedingly small. more

European Risk Communication Platform
EURIC
Panic would be all over if we were not of the opinion that our technical plants are safe. The general public has trust in the industrial sector – over years, the chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industry has worked hard to create this image. This is the way it should be. A company’s good image can be the safety net that saves a company from bankruptcy in the event of an accident. Risk management therefore does not only entail keeping safety plants safe; it also involves keeping the general public aware and convincing it about the prevailing high safety standards. It’s a permanent mission to make technical plants safer. New innovations are necessary to attain this and this why CSE institute was founded with the support of the industrial sector. more

Pipeline-Security
PipeSecure
Despite the high technical safety of gas pipelines, there are (major) damage events on the distribution and distribution pipelines (Gislenghien 2004, Gräveneck 2007 and Oppau 2014) and on house pipes. The main cause of such events are external effects, in particular by excavators, drills and agricultural and forestry equipment. The CSE Institute has set itself the goal of increasing this security. more
